HOW DO I BECOME A BELIEVER?

1. Repent

a. Turn from trusting in Yourself to God.

“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the
LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.”
(ISAIAH 12:2 ESV)

2. Believe

a. Jesus is the Christ, God’s promised King.

“Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ…’”
(MATTHEW 16:16A ESV)

b. Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and man.
“Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’”
(MATTHEW 16:16 ESV)

c. Jesus Died on the cross for your sins.

“God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
(ROMANS 5:8 ESV)

d. Jesus Rose Again defeating death and is alive today.

“[Christ] was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures…
he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.”
(1 CORINTHIANS 15:4-5)

3. Receive

a. Call Out to the Lord Jesus to save you.

“For ‘everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’”
(ROMANS 10:13 ESV)

b. Receive Christ and His Holy Spirit into your life.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the
right to become children of God…”
(JOHN 1:12 ESV)

WHAT IS A RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?

1. Our relationship with God is based on Grace.

“For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your
own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works so that no one
may boast.”
(EPHESIANS 2:8-9)

2. We obey Jesus out of Love, not out of Guilt.

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
(JOHN 14:15 ESV)

3. We Pray and read God’s Word to commune with Him.

“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my
flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
(PSALM 63:1 ESV)

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

The Bible teaches that baptism is a symbolic act. It’s the first step in following Jesus Christ as Lord. Declaring to the body your personal faith in Jesus. As a wedding ring identifies a husband with his wife, so baptism identifies a Christian with Christ. At Riverside Church, we believe the Bible teaches that baptism is for believers only – for those who have repented of their sins and placed their faith in Jesus Christ. For this reason, we don’t baptize infants or young children. Our Statement of Faith describes baptism in this way:

“Water baptism is intended only for the individual who has received the saving benefits of Christ’s atoning work and become his disciple. Therefore, in obedience to Christ’s command and as a testimony to God, the Church, oneself, and the world, a believer should be immersed in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Water baptism is a visual demonstration of a person’s union with Christ in the likeness of his death and resurrection. It signifies that his former way of life has been put to death, and vividly depicts a person’s release from the mastery of sin.”

If you’ve never been baptized as a believer, even if you’ve been saved for a while, we encourage you to still be baptized – publicly declaring your faith and allegiance to Jesus Christ. Though we don’t believe that baptism saves anyone, we do believe it is an important step of obedience and discipleship.
