We Woke Up Today!

By December 21, 2012No Comments

Well…the world didn’t end today! In case you didn’t know, December 21, 2012 is the day the Mayan calendar ended. And of course, end of Myan calendar = end of the world. So, no great apocalypse, no birth of a new and better world, just the same old boring one we had yesterday.

Even though most of us knew this wasn’t the end, I have little doubt that many woke up breathing a sigh of relief this morning. Not necessarily because of the inconvenience fire and brimstone brings, but because of that master “to do” list that needs to get done before the final day actually comes. Come on, you know what I’m talking about.

Well, this craziness isn’t all bad. What’s good about these false predictions are that they help us remember that life will not always look like it does today. There will be an end. The Lord, Jesus Christ, will return. And he will gather his people, execute judgment on the unrepentant (Matt. 25:32), and bring new life to the heavens and earth (Isa. 65:17; 2Peter 3:13; Rev. 21:1).

For the Christian, this final day is not a cause for fear (I hope I’ll be ok), or regret (I wish I could have experienced more). The apostle John, at the end of Revelation, writes, “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Rev. 22:20)! In this simple verse we get some help in how we’re to think: 1) In expectation, and 2) In anticipation.

Jesus is coming, and coming soon. Even though 2000 years have passed since John’s letter, we must not think Christ’s delay is indefinite. Jesus is coming! When? Soon. How soon? We don’t exactly know, but what we do know is it’s sure, it’s in his perfect timing and it’s according to his perfect plan.

Not only is he coming, but our heart’s cry should be, ComePlease! We want this day to come. We need this day to come. In The Lord of the Rings, the hobbit Sam Gamgee poses a question that all of us want answered. “Is everything sad going to come untrue?” Oh, what a question. The answer is a resounding, Yes! One day, in Jesus Christ, everything sad will come untrue. All wrongs will be made right. All forms of evil will disappear. All the horrors of killing fields, infanticide, and school shootings will be redeemed. Even the dark depths of my sin will see its final restoration. Oh Lord, Come Quickly!

As another year draws to an end, let’s ask God to renew our fire for His Son’s return. And let’s ask Him to make this truth fuel our passion to spread the good news of the gospel. For the Christian, Christ’s return is wonderful; for the non-Christian, that day will be terrible. Let’s love others enough to tell them about Jesus. In the strength of our Lord, let’s go and make disciples for His glory. Maranatha!
